The maritime industry employs over 1.6 million people. Only 1.2% of those are women. With so few women in the industry, it makes it almost impossible to be seen or heard. The lack of representation meant a lot of young girls and women don’t even realise there’s a place for them in the industry. Which has led to years of slow growth in recruitment numbers among women.

How do we increase representation among women while giving female seafarers a sense of pride for their work in maritime?

Solution

On the inaugural International Day for Women in Maritime, MISC created a platform where women were invited to share their stories of working in maritime. They spoke about their beginnings, overcoming hardships, and the personal gratification they experienced from working in the industry.
