“Banana” is a term used to denote a Chinese person who does not know how to speak/is not fluent in Mandarin. Many individuals ignore the term “banana” because they are unaware of the prejudice towards “bananas” in Malaysia and its influence on their lives. I decided to share my story in a form of an audio drama on how it’s like growing up with others as a “banana”, since I believe many “bananas” out there may relate to it.
By telling people my true stories and sentiments, I wish to show them a part of us (bananas) that they don’t see and how it impacts us. By doing so, I hope to increase empathy on this issue.
